Our Non-Profit Company History

Bestwork Industries for the Blind, Inc. (Bestwork) is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people who are blind or visually impaired by providing training and employment opportunities in a supportive work environment.

Bestwork was founded on September 14, 1981, by Jim Varsaci, a veteran of World War II who was blinded in combat. Varsaci’s tenacity to empower people who are blind by providing them with training and employment, thus ensuring they were contributing members of society, paved the way for the agency to thrive. Shortly after inception, Varsaci – in collaboration with Bestwork’s Board of Directors and National Industries for the Blind (NIB) – secured Bestwork’s first federal government contract, the Navy neckerchief (which we still produce today!) available through the AbilityOne Program, formerly known as the JWOD (Javits, Wagner, O’Day) Act for workers who are blind or visually impaired.

What began as a contract shop with a few employees has grown into a self-sustaining manufacturing agency, successfully partnering with Fortune 500 companies for materials and supplies, while growing job opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired. Bestwork has adopted the universally recognized best practices of Lean Manufacturing and ISO 9001:2015 certification. In October 2023, Bestwork opened its first satellite location at JVS of MetroWest in Montclair, NJ with plans to open additional satellites throughout the state.

Bestwork is certified by NJ’s Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired as a workplace of Competitive Integrated Employment. All blind employees earn a competitive wage equal to their sighted counterparts performing the same or similar duties. Bestwork’s reputation of providing quality products and on-time delivery led to the contracts we hold today with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and General Services Administration (GSA) to support the needs of the Air Force, Army, Navy, and other federal customers.

  • To foster a learning environment that encourages innovation and leads to new pathways.
  • To exhibit accountability through open and transparent communication, mission-based decision-making, and healthy employee and business relationships.
  • To encourage ownership, consistency, and positive leadership at all levels.
